War Invasion
[4:36] When AJ thinks back to the Russian invasion of Afghanistan in the late 1970s and early 1980s, he is grateful that he and his family survived. With the support of family and friends, they could make their way out of the country.
Career [16:00] After arriving in the United States as a first-generation immigrant, AJ and his family settled in Northern Virginia. When he was younger, his family wanted him to become a doctor, so he went to a career center to find a job and make some money. However, computers will be obsolete at the time, and hence they will require IT staff. An additional year at VCU allowed AJ to get a degree in Information
Systems.
[18:20] AJ began his career as a database administrator for a manufacturing company before advancing to project management and eventually becoming an IT director. After a while, he decided to take a break and go into real estate. When AJ had a baby in 2008, capital markets dried up, and closing deals became extremely tough. After that, he decided to return to the tech industry.
Good Company [20:45] AJ believes that the best companies invest heavily in their employees, have leaders who have a clear idea of what they want, and are open with all information so that every employee can contribute to the company’s achievement of its goals about customers. Conflicts in the
Workplace
[27:40] Clear communication is extremely challenging for AJ in the corporate world, especially in larger firms. He thinks it’s more difficult to provide leadership with input and 360-degree feedback in large organizations.
Entrepreneurship
[35:50] For AJ, the most difficult element of beginning his entrepreneurial path was taking the risk of failing. Once he leaped, he saw that it wasn’t so horrible after all and that it was just a lot of learning. If you’re afraid of taking risks, you won’t be able to succeed as an entrepreneur.
[39:00] AJ believes that Key Cyber’s success may be attributed to the people behind the organization, who collaborated, grew, and learned from each other. Everything has to do with how you’re going to use it. Operating a company takes a lot of time and effort, and AJ is still learning how to lead and implement systems.
[42:51] As CEOs, they have to deal with two issues. Companies should also be concerned about the greater good as well as focusing on the well-being of their customers or staff.
