[2:52] To truly narrow in on that end product, it’s crucial to fully understand what you’re looking for in collaboration and what you’re bringing to the table. And how are you adding value so that the person with whom you’re partnering wants to make a deal with you?
[4:34] Look for your core principles, what makes you a valuable partner, a valuable running mate, and what will entice others to join your ship.
[6:03] When looking for a partner, search for someone that shares your mentality, has similar ambitions, and isn’t easily discouraged. Don’t just pick someone because you’re terrified.
[7:23] Know your strengths and shortcomings, understand who you are, and know what you would bring to the table and what you believe in by self-vetting.
[17:16] The attitude, the thought that there would be someone out there to take the position I had envisioned myself sitting in, was the most crucial factor. Someone else will steal it if you don’t keep your head down and work, keeping a steady eye on where you’re headed. Entrepreneurship, on the other hand, I believe is very much like that.
[21:54] Building credibility in the partnership sector entails being an authority figure. Remind yourself that this is what you’ve done in the past and what you intend to do in the future. You had to know your product to be able to talk about pitching to venture capitalists or investors.
[30:05] I think it’s easier to put one’s thoughts on the backseat and just go with the flow to make sure the other person is satisfied. One thing I’ve discovered is that you must take a backseat to yourself. I can be the type of person that wants to do everything and anything to think things through and move things forward. And I frequently get in my way by stepping in front of someone who should be taking on that position of responsibility, even though the result will be the same. Keep in mind that you must stay in your lane.
[33:53] When you’re on the verge of a dispute, take a break from the conversation. I’m a firm believer in self-awareness. You must always be aware of your position. I believe the only time it is worthwhile to take a step back is when your value complements that of your business partner, and you both need each other. When you’re in a situation like this, take a step back and think about what you’re doing. What are you and your spouse battling about, and how is my ego getting in the way of progressing?
[36:11] If the partnership isn’t working out, figure out how far along you are in the process; if there aren’t many areas you can improve on, go on while maintaining a cordial relationship. Don’t waste your money on unwise investments, and don’t limit yourself from achieving the amount of success you desire.
[54:53] It is critical to have the proper vetting procedure in place. However, it’s also vital to know who you are and what you offer to the table. You don’t want to be on the other side of this debate, having jumped into this with a partner and now having to go through a different vetting process than you. You believe you’re on the right track, but you and your partner are on opposing ends of the spectrum. To get anything done, you must have consistent clarity about what you’re trying to do.
